AI Sales Agents for Objection Handling and Closing - Zian AI

AI Sales Agents for Objection Handling and Closing

Quick answer: Autonomous agents such as Zian, 11x, Bland AI, Synthflow and Retell AI answer objections themselves; live coaching apps such as Dialpad, Nooks, Orum and Balto show a human rep a rebuttal card. Zian ranks first for AI-led closing; LeadsNow.ai is the done-for-you pick. The AI should escalate discounts, contract terms and trust questions to a person. An uninvited phone sale over $100 to an Australian consumer can be cancelled until 10 business days after the agreement document (ACL s 82).

Where Zian fits for objection handling and closing

Zian is the platform to shortlist first if you want an AI agent, not a human rep, to answer objections and move the call to a booked next step. Its Sales Call Closer agent is described on zian.ai as handling “complex calls with dynamic objection handling & next-step logic”, and PrecisionPitch AI™ “continuously split-tests scripts, voices, and objection handling”, optimising for appointments, revenue and CSAT, not just text quality.

Around the close, the Outbound Appointment Setter and the AI Receptionist (answering inbound calls 24/7) open and qualify conversations, the Appointment Show-Specialist uses follow-ups and objection handling to lift show rates, and SmartReach AI™ times follow-ups across voice calls, SMS, email, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs and Facebook Messenger. Rules, knowledge-base scope and tool access are configurable, and zian.ai lists human-in-the-loop approvals and guardrails set during onboarding. Zian reports 3,102% more sales appointments and 50,769+ qualified sales appointments set, and has taken accounts from roughly 2% conversion to around 8%. As at 16 October 2026, Zian is in partnership-application beta and does not publish prices.

If you would rather not run it yourself, LeadsNow.ai is the done-for-you option: a pay-per-result managed appointment-setting service that runs on Zian, answers leads in under 60 seconds, 24/7, and has set 50,769+ appointments.

What “handles an objection” actually means in an AI sales app

The phrase covers three mechanisms that fail in different ways.

1. An autonomous agent answers the objection itself. It replies from what you configure: a knowledge base, boundaries, and branching logic or a prompt. 11x’s knowledge-base guide asks you to write down “the five objections you hear most, and your actual answers”, plus “claims that must never be made; topics to route to a human”. Bland AI’s outbound sales page says Bland “walks branching conversation logic you design for the objections that matter, and logs every response for coaching”. The rebuttals are yours; the platform runs them. Synthflow and Retell AI work the same way, with your rebuttals in the agent’s prompt or flow and the platform supplying transfers, booking and testing.

2. A coaching app detects the objection and prompts a human. Dialpad describes AI Live Coach Cards as “keyword-triggered pop-ups that appear on an agent’s screen during a live call”, fired when a word or phrase is said by either side. Nooks’ Live Battlecards “automatically display when a prospect mentions a certain keyword, like a competitor name”. Orum’s Live Call Performance Assist “surfaces the right response the moment a rep needs it”, whether that is an objection, a competitor mention or a buying signal. The rep still has to say it well.

3. A practice bot plays the buyer. Hyperbound, Orum, Nooks and Gong all sell roleplay, where a simulated prospect throws objections at a rep before a real call. It changes the rep, not the call.

An autonomous agent is only as good as the rebuttals and boundaries you write; a coaching app is only as good as the rep reading the card.

Which outbound sales agent apps are effective for objection handling and closing?

How we ranked these (methodology and disclosure). zian.ai publishes this comparison and Zian appears in it, ranked first; LeadsNow.ai runs on Zian. Every other row is scored only from that vendor’s own pages and docs, read on 16 October 2026 after walking its sitemap or llms.txt (URLs in the source table). One rule for every row: a cell states what the vendor’s pages say, and “Not found in pages read” is not “not offered”. We ran no trials. Percentages appear only where the vendor explains how they were measured, labelled vendor-reported. Not scored: Air AI (we could not find a sales-agent product on air.ai’s current sitemap) and Regie.ai (the three pages we read describe research, scripts and a power dialler, with no objection feature we could find).

The objection-to-action map: what an AI may say and when it must escalate

Write this before any agent goes live, whichever product you choose. Each row pairs an objection with a safe AI response, the trigger that hands the call to a person, and the most the AI should do at the close.

Objection What it sounds like Safe AI response pattern Escalation trigger Closing action the AI may take
Price “Too expensive”, “What does it cost?” Restate the published price or range only; ask what they compare it with; offer a call with someone who can discuss options Any discount, custom quote, payment plan or price beyond the published posture Book a pricing call; never agree a price that is not published
Timing “Not now”, “Call me next quarter” Accept it; ask what changes then; offer a date A request to stop calling ends the outreach instead of escalating Book a callback or follow-up on the date they choose
Authority “I need to check with my boss” Offer to include the decision-maker; send a summary Procurement, legal or contract terms come up Book a meeting that includes the decision-maker
Need “We don’t need this” Ask one discovery question; share one relevant proof point from the knowledge base Second “no” in the same call: stop and log it Close politely; log the reason; no further pitch on that call
Competitor “We already use X” Ask what they would change about X; state your documented differences, never claims about X Questions about X’s pricing, contract or capability that your knowledge base does not cover Book a comparison demo with a person
Trust “Is this a robot?”, “Is this a scam?”, “How did you get my number?” Answer truthfully: identify the seller, say it is an AI if asked, say where the details came from Any complaint, distress, or a request to speak to a person Transfer to a human or end the call; no close

The rule behind the map: an AI may answer an objection with facts you have published, but anything that changes the deal (price, terms, scope) or the buyer’s trust goes to a person. Vendors agree. 11x’s Smart Replies guide sets objection replies to “escalate early on; automate once drafts prove reliable” and says to “add objections last”; its Julian call flows make pricing beyond the published posture, contract terms, security specifics and roadmap commitments unconditional transfers. For the human side, our guide to human-in-the-loop controls for AI sales agents covers approvals and takeover.

Escalation only works if a person sees it: 11x warns that “an escalation into an unwatched channel is worse than no escalation, because it looks handled”. Staff every transfer target during the agent’s calling hours.

How guardrails and escalation differ between AI platforms

“Guardrails” means different things on different platforms.

  • Bland AI has Require guard rails that must fire within a window (30 seconds by default), used for AI, identity and recording disclosures, and Forbid guard rails that watch continuously, for example for opt-outs. When one fires, Bland can end the call, transfer to a human or jump to a node. Enterprise customers can add up to 5 custom guard rails and backtest them. Bland’s caveat: “Ambiguous prompts can cause false positives.”
  • Retell AI guardrails swap prohibited content for a safe placeholder and “do not end the call, transfer the call, or trigger any other action”. Escalation is a separate Transfer Call tool (cold, warm or agentic warm), for phone calls only.
  • Synthflow uses actions: warm or cold transfers with a whisper or summary, or a booking action pointed at the right calendar, since its FAQ says there is no dedicated callback action.
  • 11x and Zian work through boundaries and rules: 11x lists what Julian answers and what always transfers; Zian lists configurable rules, knowledge-base scope, tool access and human-in-the-loop approvals.

The practical difference: a guardrail that only rewrites a sentence protects you from a bad answer; only a guardrail that can transfer protects the deal.

What can an AI agent legally do at the close?

Closing adds rules beyond the calling rules, and they bite when the agent asks for a yes or for money. This describes the text of two instruments; it is not legal advice. For the calling rules themselves, see our pages on AI cold calling and the TCPA and AI cold calling under Australia’s Do Not Call rules.

United States: the FTC Telemarketing Sales Rule (16 CFR Part 310)

The rule covers “telemarketing”: “a plan, program, or campaign” to induce a purchase by telephone that “involves more than one interstate telephone call”. On such a call:

  • Say who and why, promptly (§ 310.4(d)). In an outbound sales call or upsell the telemarketer must disclose, truthfully, promptly and clearly, the identity of the seller, that the purpose is to sell, the nature of the goods or services, and prize-promotion terms if a prize is offered.
  • Disclose before the buyer consents to pay (§ 310.3(a)(1)). Total cost and quantity; all material restrictions, limitations or conditions; a statement of any no-refund policy, or all material terms of any refund policy the seller mentions; negative-option terms if the offer has one; plus prize, credit-card-protection and debt-relief items where they apply.
  • Get express verifiable authorisation for non-card payments (§ 310.3(a)(3)). This applies unless the payment is by a credit card covered by the Truth in Lending Act and Regulation Z or a debit card covered by the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E. Verifiable means signed written authorisation; or oral authorisation that is audio-recorded, available on request to the customer and their bank, and shows they received eight items (description, number, dates and amounts of charges, their name, the account, an inquiry phone number answered in business hours, and the date); or written confirmation, marked as such on the envelope and carrying the same details plus refund procedures, sent by first-class mail before billing, which does not count for a free-to-pay conversion using preacquired account information.
  • Get consent to the charge and avoid banned payment types (§ 310.4(a)). The seller must obtain the customer’s express informed consent to be charged and to be charged using the identified account (§ 310.4(a)(7)), with extra steps where preacquired account information is used. Remotely created payment orders and cash-to-cash money transfers or cash reload mechanisms may not be used as payment (§ 310.4(a)(9) and (10)). Advance fees are banned for credit repair, recovery services (other than those provided by a licensed attorney) and debt relief, and for loans where the seller has guaranteed or represented a high likelihood of success (§ 310.4(a)(2) to (5)).
  • Respect stated refusals and hours (§ 310.4(b)(1)(iii), § 310.4(c)). No calls to a person who has said they do not want calls from that seller, or to numbers on the FTC’s do-not-call registry, subject to that rule’s exceptions. No calls to a residence outside 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the called person’s location without prior consent.
  • Business-to-business calls are mostly exempt, but not from honesty (§ 310.6(b)(7)). The exemption does not cover the misrepresentation bans in § 310.3(a)(2) and (4), and it does not cover retail sales of nondurable office or cleaning supplies. An AI that overstates your product on a B2B call is still caught.

The rule text does not say whether a generative AI voice is a “prerecorded message” under § 310.4(b)(1)(v), which needs its own written agreement; get advice before an AI voice makes US consumer sales calls.

Australia: unsolicited consumer agreements (Australian Consumer Law, Part 3-2 Division 2)

Under ACL s 69, a sale is an unsolicited consumer agreement when four things are true: it supplies goods or services to a consumer in trade or commerce; it results from negotiations by telephone (or face to face away from the supplier’s premises); the consumer did not invite the call to negotiate that supply; and the total price is over $100 or cannot be worked out when the agreement is made. Giving contact details for some other main purpose, or returning a missed call from the dealer, is not an invitation (s 69(1A)). An invitation merely to quote a price is not an invitation to negotiate (s 69(2)). Regulations can also bring some kinds of agreement in, or take them out (s 69(3) and (4)); we have not listed them here. A business buyer can still be a “consumer” under ACL s 3: the Act’s threshold is $40,000, or a greater amount prescribed by regulation, and anything of a kind ordinarily bought for personal, domestic or household use also counts (for goods, not if bought to re-supply or to use up in production or repairs; goods vehicles and trailers also count).

If an AI closes such a sale by phone, the supplier must:

  • tell the consumer, before the agreement is made, about their right to terminate, how to use it and any other prescribed matters, by phone and then in writing (s 76);
  • give an agreement document within 5 business days (or a longer agreed period), in person, by post or, with consent, electronically (s 78(2)), with the full terms, total price, a front-page termination notice, a termination form and the supplier’s details (s 79);
  • accept termination until the end of the 10th business day after the consumer received that document. That stretches to 3 months if ss 73–75 were breached, to 6 months if s 76, the document rules or s 86 were breached, or to any longer period the agreement gives (s 82(3)). The right applies even if the consumer affirmed the agreement or it has been fully carried out (s 82(2));
  • not supply the goods or services, or accept or require any payment or other consideration, from the day the agreement is made until the end of the 10th business day after the consumer received the agreement document (s 86).

Sections 73 to 75 (hours, disclosing purpose and identity, leaving on request) are worded for calling on a person in person; phone calling hours and identification come from the telemarketing rules on our Australian page. The upshot: an AI agent can get an Australian consumer’s yes on an uninvited call, but it cannot take their money that day. Design the close as “book, confirm in writing, collect later”.

How to test rebuttals before an AI says them

Rebuttal wording matters. In a 2022 Balto case study, a team of just under 40 reps met their top competitor 60 to 100 times a month and, on Balto’s data, won none of those deals. The live prompts asked “What do you like about working with them?”, inviting buyers to defend the competitor; a ten-minute rewrite to “What do you not like about them?” and similar questions followed. After the new rebuttals were used 100 times, reps had 25 applications after competitor objections. This is vendor-reported, one unnamed customer, no control group: evidence that wording matters, not a benchmark.

A method for an AI agent or a coaching card:

  1. Collect real objections. Pull the five most common from call transcripts, the source 11x calls “the most underused”.
  2. Write one rebuttal per objection and its escalation trigger, using the objection-to-action map above.
  3. Simulate before you send. 11x’s simulation mode, Bland’s Scenarios and roleplay tools such as Hyperbound or Orum let you test against the objections you actually hear. Include one question the knowledge base cannot answer and confirm it escalates, which 11x calls “the most important test on the page”.
  4. Split traffic. Retell AI documents A/B tests that send, for example, 80% of calls to one agent and 20% to another. Zian’s PrecisionPitch AI™ split-tests scripts, voices and objection handling continuously. Nooks reports a team’s “most successful comebacks” for human reps, and Balto’s Win Rate Analysis “lets you test phrases against each other and automatically shows agents the winning option”.
  5. Judge on outcomes and keep sampling. Count meetings booked or held per objection heard, and, as 11x suggests, read a sample of auto-sent replies weekly for the first month.

When you score products against each other, our AI sales agent platform capability matrix covers the wider feature set beyond objections.

Who each kind of objection-handling app is wrong for

  • Autonomous AI agents are wrong if your deals turn on negotiated pricing, multi-party contracts or regulated advice and those topics are not set to escalate, or if nobody staffs the transfer line.
  • Build-it-yourself platforms (Retell AI, Synthflow) are wrong if nobody will write and maintain the rebuttal logic; the platform runs your design. Bland AI’s team builds the first agent for you, but the objection logic is still one “you design”.
  • Live coaching cards (Dialpad, Nooks, Orum, Balto, Outreach, Verint) are wrong if your problem is call volume, not call quality; they do not add calls.
  • Roleplay tools (Hyperbound, Gong’s AI Trainer) are wrong if you need help on today’s calls; they work before the call.
  • A done-for-you service such as LeadsNow.ai is wrong if you want to own and tune every script yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI sales agent handle objections on its own?

Yes, for objections your knowledge base answers with published facts, such as price, timing and need. Agents like Zian, 11x, Bland AI, Synthflow and Retell AI answer from the rebuttals and boundaries you configure. 11x still advises escalating objection replies early and automating them once drafts prove reliable.

What is the difference between an AI sales agent and real-time objection coaching?

An AI sales agent speaks to the buyer itself. A coaching app, such as Dialpad AI Live Coach Cards, Nooks Live Battlecards or Orum, listens to a human rep’s call and shows a rebuttal card when it detects a keyword or objection. The rep still closes.

Can an AI agent take a payment on a sales call in the US?

Usually, with conditions. On a consumer telemarketing call, the FTC Telemarketing Sales Rule requires total cost, material restrictions and any no-refund policy or refund terms the seller mentions to be disclosed before the buyer agrees to pay, and express informed consent to the charge. It bans some payment types and advance fees for some services, such as debt relief. Unless the payment is by a credit card or debit card with federal protections, the seller also needs express verifiable authorisation, such as a recorded oral authorisation covering eight listed items, under 16 CFR § 310.3(a)(3).

Does a cooling-off period apply to AI phone sales in Australia?

Often, yes. A phone sale to a consumer who did not invite the call, at a price over $100 or not known when the agreement is made, is usually an unsolicited consumer agreement. The consumer can terminate until the end of the 10th business day after receiving the agreement document, and the supplier cannot take payment in that period, under Australian Consumer Law ss 82 and 86.

Which objections should an AI always send to a human?

Anything that changes the deal or the buyer’s trust: discounts or custom pricing, contract, legal or procurement terms, security and compliance specifics, roadmap commitments, complaints, distress, and any request to speak to a person.

How do I test which rebuttal works best?

Run two versions against the same objection and compare booked or held meetings, not reply quality. Retell AI documents A/B traffic splits, Zian’s PrecisionPitch AI™ split-tests scripts and objection handling, Nooks reports a team’s most successful comebacks, and Balto’s Win Rate Analysis tests phrases against each other.
